Too Much Energy

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 3, 2010, 8:15 AM

I tried an experiment with DA the past few weeks and noticed that when I gave points and spent nearly every waking hour on DA more and more people visited my page. In fact it was hovering between 80 - 120 views a day and got to 158 views one time. When I changed the rules to giving points and spent less time on DA my views have dropped to about 20 a day.

So I have concluded that for most DA artist, my work can not stand on its own in bringing people to my page. And since I do not have the time nor the energy to waste on DA for the hours required to satisfy my ego, I am cutting back and being content with those 20 or less people that do visit my page.

Hope you are all enjoying your summer as much as I am. Soon I will be heading to Montana to shoot a wedding. That should be interesting.

You are so right.. I think the main cause for this is: DA is too large. There are just too many people on it and the art is not the main thing anymore. It often makes me sick when I see art which is soooo appreciated, like more then 100 faves but when I think that it's just not special.. And I see often artist who have so much attention, but their art is not the most beautiful on earth.. That makes me sick. Last couple of weeks, I tried to collect points. Now I have to admit, I got attention when I did that. Now I did not much and the attention is again minimal.

But hey, I watch you account, I like to watch your journals and art :) So I am one of the 20 active watchers, I hope :)

Everything you said is completely true. The number of talented people that are extremely underexposed is very, very high. That's because the dA homepage is full of deviations from very popular deviants and because many don't take the time to browse through the recently submitted works and find quality and much more talented artists.
And I think that most of the unknown deviants around here get the feeling that their work isn't worth much or they feel defeated and give up on trying to share their art with others, it's a complete frustration. The first couple of months after I joined dA, I submitted a few photos but I didn't get any feedback on them (perhaps 1 :+fav: on a photo on a rare ocassion) . Naturally, I felt discouraged and after a short while I deleted all of them.
I didn't close my account because I love discovering great art around here and I love browsing through photographs. :dalove:
Recently, I had some questions regarding why there wasn't anything in my gallery and that was an impulse for me to upload again.
Also, I think people resort to :points:, llamas and other tricks because of what I mentioned above. They feel underappreciated and notice that those are the ways they can get a little more exposure. It's not a good thing, but it's understandable in my opinion.

Anyway, you are a very good photographer and deserve the best appreciation, if you don't get it around here. :aww:
So, keep on photographing and share it with the 20 people who are interested in your work. :tighthug:

page views aren`t always equal to a beautiful gallery/talented person; what I had noticed here on dA is the fact that if you don`t interact with the members/groups the work you show on this site won`t get noticed

but there are also people that care about the ones that are watching; I can say at least in my case - I view all the submissions that are sent by the people I watch; if I like the work I fave it and comment it(I do admit I don`t comment as much as I would like because I often don`t find the right words to say what the work is expressing to me - it may be a language barrier, English being a foreign language for me --- but I do try to show it in words when the work is truly impressive )

when I first came here I didn`t have any expectations on popularity or anything like that ... I just submitted my work (and hoped someone would like it) and for the rest of the dA time I spend is checking out other peoples work :D

I hope you have fun at the wedding shoot :)

On some days, I have over 300 pageviews ... but they don't mean anything. Most of them came from "GetWatchers" ... they click and click and click and most people doesn't look at the page that is shown to them.

And hey ... my work doesn't get noticed, too. One day I had 330 pageviews or so, the next day (!) it was 20, because I didn't have the time for giving llamas and writing comments and using GetWatchers ... the thing is, good work stays under exposed when you don't spend the time on making friends here. It's all about vitamine B. Yesterday, I noticed a new work on the dA homepage ... it was a picture with a coloured rose; it's overexposed, has no special composition and she didn't even paint the rose herself ... but it got over 3000 faves (!) in only 10 hours, because she's well-known and she's the founder of the group "ExtraordinaireArt" ... and she doesn't even answer on comments or questions.
What I want to say is, her picture isn't bad, it's quite nice, but it's nothing special, it's a quick snapshot. There are so many artists that try much harder, that have a good eye for beautiful objects to take pictures of and a better feeling for composition, but they don't get noticed.

I think what really pulls the people to one's profile is a Daily Deviation or a gallery full of breasts, nudes or sweet little hamsters or kittens :lmao: and - for sure - having the right friends here ... the really well-known ones here are all friends.

And hey, I like your gallery :glomp: you really have an eye for beautiful sceneries, your pictures make me want to go there. :meow: Just keep on taking pictures and submitting them to dA, there are people who want to see your pictures (like me!). And if those people are "only" 20 ... doesn't matter :)

(I hope this wasn't full of really baaaaaaad grammar mistakes :lmao: )

I have no access to breasts, hamsters, or kittens so I guess I am just out of luck.

Yes, that is the trend I am noticing. I just thought I would write this so that those who are watching me know that my replies and time spent on DA won't be as frequent, but I will check in often as possible and that I am thinking about all of you.

Thanks so much for your kindness, it brightens my days. :tighthug:

Oh, no cats? Cats are so wonderful, I wouldn't want to live without them :) okay, when they are grown up, they get lazy and sometimes a bit weird, but they make me happy. :aww:
But I think dogs make you happy, too. Cats are dogs for lazy people like me :D

I would ove to have a dog ... a Saint Bernard, but my mother doesn't like dogs, we have six cats and I would be too lazy to go out with him a few times a day :giggle:

That's nice to hear :glomp: I'm happy that the cats are okay for him, beacuse he's important for me, and I also love my "Klausi" (one of our cats, he's my darling!) ... so I want them both to sleep in my bed. :aww: He even cared for my hamster when I was ill - although he was afraid of getting bitten by it :giggle:

Tim, I have always had opinion that DA is mainly a social net. You will never get attention without interactions with people, even if your art is totally outstanding and amazingly beautiful. I am often in awe and feel almost shamefull, when I see a fabulous gallery and then I find out that I have much more favs and pageviews, though my work is not from half as good.

It´s natural that if you don´t spend too much time on DA, people don´t go to your page. DA is so huge and everybody here is so overwhelmed by messages and new deviations, that they first try to answer all the things in their own message centre and I suppose that most people prefere answering as the first those, who are in contact with them and who are their friends.

And of course, like everywhere, there are some people here too, who are self-serving and calculating and when they smell profit for themselves, they just grab it and go (or stay until the profit is still here)

Pageview number has very little connection with the quality of art. I´ll bet you could see it too - some really horrible artist, with horrible pics - and they have amazingly huge pageview number - but of course, they cultivate very lively social interactions, make contests, are amusing, and I don´t know what else...

Don´t be sad my dear, you are a great friend and a fantastically good photographer, don´t waste your energy on people who abuse it. I think you did a good decision and you will feel much better if your visitors will be just people who are REALLY interested in your work and your thoughts and messages. And I am still sure, that you will become gradually very popular, you are too good artist and too nice and lovely person not to be true. ;)

:tighthug: Thank you Betty! I can't be sad when I have friends like you on DA. Truly, I am not worried about being popular, I was just conducting an experiment and this was the result. My time is way too busy and full of life that I have no room for worrying about trivial popularity issues.

Oh, I didn´t want to say this, I know, that your life is far away from worries of being popular. :-) But I really think, that you can´t avoid having more and more friends and admirors of your work here. It´s just a fact about which I am sure. :tighthug:

And you are right, DA is very interesting place for observation of human behaviour. :D

i have no idea what points are! twenty-something is the norm for me. unless i post a nude. then people get a little excited. and as lame as FB may be, oddly enough it is thru there that i am finding work, not here.

Points can be used as cash to purchase DA stuff and accounts. I am still trying to figure out FB. Most of my work is coming from connections through PPA (professional photographers of america).

I am getting out of town this afternoon. Should be back on Tuesday. Jessica does not like the fireworks so we usually hike to the heart of the Olympics until the smoke settles. :)
