Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me.

Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang.

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Too Much Energy

I tried an experiment with DA the past few weeks and noticed that when I gave points and spent nearly every waking hour on DA more and more people visited my page. In fact it was hovering between 80 - 120 views a day and got to 158 views one time. When I changed the rules to giving points and spent less time on DA my views have dropped to about 20 a day.

So I have concluded that for most DA artist, my work can not stand on its own in bringing people to my page. And since I do not have the time nor the energy to waste on DA for the hours required to satisfy my ego, I am cutting back and being content with those 20 or less people that do visit my page.

Hope you are all enjoying your summer as much as I am. Soon I will be heading to Montana to shoot a wedding. That should be interesting.
